Meaning of विशिष्ठ गार्गेय
[Brihat Samhita talks about Arundhatī and Vasiṣṭha : The Ṛṣis take a period of 100 years to go over each of the 27 asterisms. They rise in the north-east and are accompanied by the chaste Arundhatī (Alcor)—the consort of Vasiṣṭha (Mizar). - see this]
Since most don't know sanskrrta, it leaves many people in unawareness of their lineage. I took a lot of time and sanskrrta learning to figure out meaning of my gotra grammatically : विशिष्ठ गार्गेय
We(all in our current paternal lineage) were/are generally told by the family brahmana that - विशिष्ठ means the male part of gotra and गार्गेय is the female part of gotra. But when I checked gotra in other parts of country it is generally paternal only.
To make it even more confusing "some" think that - गार्गेय - is a misspelling and instead should be - गार्ग्य - which is wrong because it is a word for paternal lineage , as गार्ग्य - means son of गर्ग
So what does विशिष्ठ गार्गेय mean ? विशिष्ठ is paternal lineage from the rrshi - विशिष्ठ and गार्गेय is interesting shabda - it is our maternal lineage from - गार्गी , without going into details of grammar - just like - Arjuna is called : Kaunteya - which means of Kuntii or from Kuntii aka Son of Kuntii, same way Gārgeya / गार्गेय - means Son of गार्गी. गार्गी in itself is a feminine word meaning daughter of rrshi - गर्ग
Why use the both maternal and paternal lineages ? Maybe because it goes with the tradition as that of Vasiṣṭha and Arundhatī.

So someone who is son of विशिष्ठ and गार्गी - is called विशिष्ठ गार्गेय
