Meaning of विशिष्ठ गार्गेय

I took a lot of time and sanskrrta learning to figure out meaning of my gotra grammatically : विशिष्ठ गार्गेय We(all in our current paternal lineage) were/are generally told by the family brahmana that - विशिष्ठ means the male part of gotra and गार्गेय is the female part of gotra. But when I checked gotra in other parts of country it is generally paternal only.
